The story of Wings Airways began with a local family and their drive to start as a small commuter service. Wings of Alaska was the essence of what hard work, commitment, family values and a passion for what you do can accomplish. At its peak, the airline offered scheduled passenger, freight and mail service throughout Northern Southeast Alaska, an extensive charter air service as well as a seasonal floatplane tour company.
In 2002 an exciting opportunity was given to some of the long time employees, providing the ability to purchase the flightseeing floatplane tour portion of the business. That same year, employees gathered their finances and expertise and formed the Wings Airways tour company that carries on the Wings tradition today!
In 2019 we welcomed a new ownership group that included innovative and long-time leaders in both Alaska tourism and aviation industries. The new investors allowed a portion of the current shareholders an opportunity to move on knowing their beloved Wings Airways will continue successfully into the future.
We partner with the owners of the Taku Lodge in a longstanding relationship exclusive to each other. Built in 1923, the Lodge was built as a private hunting lodge, and eventually was passed onto another family. An adventurous woman set the Taku Lodge on the Alaska map in the 1930’s with an epic 1000 mile sled dog journey…alone. Because of Mary Joyce, the Taku Lodge is on the National Registry of Historic Places.
In 1993 Ken and Michelle Ward purchased the Taku Lodge and set out to raise their family while sharing the Lodge with vistors from around the world. Ken and Michelle have five children who have grown up in the folds of the Taku Lodge; Michael (who now manages the Lodge with his wife Jessalyn and sons Otis & Eils), Natalie, Buzz, Ryan and Kevin. The Ward family has enhanced the Taku Lodge in many ways with their devoted love to the keep its history alive today.
